From Invisible to 900 Organic Clicks a Day
A home & lifestyle store selling scented goods had been live for a while but was stuck at around 15 organic clicks per day - basically invisible in Google. A domain migration that was never properly finished left dozens of technical issues quietly blocking any growth: broken pages, missing meta tags, bad HTML structure, incomplete schema, and a sitemap missing half the catalog. Mobile page speed was at 53.
We came in May 2025 with a full technical and on-page SEO audit, then moved straight into fixing everything. By November the site was hitting 900+ organic clicks per day. Mobile speed hit 90+. Total impressions over the period: 1.1M.

What Was Holding the Site Back
When we ran the audit, the site had almost no organic traffic despite being live for months. There was no single cause - it was several things compounding each other.
The domain had been migrated at some point, but the cleanup was never done. Dozens of product and category pages were missing from the sitemap, some were returning 404s, and internal links were pointing to redirect chains instead of the final URLs. Google was crawling the site but couldn't index it properly.
On-page signals were just as weak. A big chunk of the catalog had no H1 tags, no meta descriptions, and images with no alt text. Schema was technically present but incomplete - no product images, no reviews - so the search snippets looked bare compared to competitors.
Mobile speed was at 53. That's well under Google's 90+ threshold, and for an ecommerce store it directly hurts conversions too - most mobile users won't wait past 2-3 seconds.
On top of all that, the backlink profile was almost empty. Domain authority was 5. Competitors were sitting at 40-70+. Even with everything else fixed, that gap alone makes ranking on competitive keywords an uphill battle.
Key Issues Found
- Domain migration not properly handled - redirect issues throughout the site
- Key product & category pages missing from sitemap.xml
- Multiple URLs returning 404 errors
- 13 pages with no H1 tag
- 15 pages with no meta description
- 26 product images with no alt attributes
- 3 pages missing canonical tags
- Schema markup present but incomplete - no images, no reviews
- Internal links pointing to 301 redirects instead of final URLs
- 22 CSS errors + multiple HTML structural issues
- No breadcrumbs on product pages
- Mobile page speed score: 53 - below Google's recommended threshold
- Domain authority: 5 - competitors averaging 40-70+
How We Fixed It
We worked through issues in order of impact - crawling and indexing first, then on-page, schema, and authority.
Technical Cleanup
Fixed all 404s, finished the domain migration (redirects, sitemap, internal links), sorted the robots.txt, and added missing canonicals. Optimized images and removed render-blocking resources - mobile speed went from 53 to 90+.
On-Page SEO
Added H1 tags and meta descriptions across all affected pages. Fixed HTML structure across the site - product titles, prices, and nav elements moved to the right semantic tags. Breadcrumbs added to all product pages.
Schema & Microdata
Completed the existing schema - added product images, review markup, and missing required fields. Search snippets went from bare text to rich results with images and ratings, matching what competitors were already showing.
Link Profile
Audited external links - added nofollow where needed, cut low-value outbound links. Built a small set of quality backlinks in the target market to start moving domain authority up from 5.
The Results
Google Search Console - organic clicks & impressions, May-November 2025
All numbers are from Google Search Console. The data covers May-November 2025. The store has since expanded into additional markets.
"The audit covered everything we needed and the implementation was done properly. Traffic has been growing since and we're happy with the results."
Key Findings from the Audit
The main issues found and documented during the technical and on-page review.
The site had been moved to a new domain before we got involved, but the migration was never finished. Redirect chains were scattered throughout internal links, the sitemap still had old URLs, and robots.txt was accidentally blocking crawl access to parts of the catalog. Until all of that was cleaned up, Google couldn't reliably index the site - regardless of the content.
The sitemap.xml existed and was accessible, but a large number of product and category pages weren't in it. Combined with the robots.txt issue, whole sections of the store had no clear path for Googlebot to find them. A page can't rank if it's not indexed, and it can't be indexed if it can't be crawled.
13 pages had no H1 at all. 15 had no meta description. 2 had descriptions that were too long. On product pages, that means Google had almost no keyword signal to work with. For a store where every category and product page should be pulling in search traffic, this was a problem across the board.
Microdata was already on the site, which was a decent starting point. But product images were missing from the schema, there was no review markup, and several required fields weren't filled in. The result: search snippets with plain text, while competitors were showing rich results with images, star ratings, and prices right in the SERP.
W3C validation flagged 22 CSS issues plus a range of HTML errors. Product titles and prices were in the wrong semantic tags, footer and menu items were marked up as headings, and 26 product images had no alt attributes. Broken semantic structure makes it harder for search engines to understand what's on the page.
Mobile PageSpeed score was 53. The main culprits: full-resolution images being served on mobile, several render-blocking JS and CSS files, and no lazy loading on product images. Speed is a direct ranking signal, and on an ecommerce site it directly affects whether users stick around long enough to buy anything.
Domain authority was 5, with 268 backlinks - most of them low quality. Competitors in the same niche were showing DA 40-70+, with hundreds of relevant referring domains behind them. With that kind of authority gap, even a technically clean site struggles to rank on anything competitive. Link building was part of the fix, not an afterthought.
